I have always been in love with food. I know I’m not supposed to be, but it’s like love at first sight – I get infatuated by the fact that my palette is about to taste something new and exciting, and once it’s there, I just can’t help myself but to go with the flow. I have always been the eater, but never the cook, so watching Chef is something that I find really refreshing and fun to do. It also inspired me to cook my own food, and made me do things that I don’t want to do – like running on the fridge at 2 in the morning to satisfy my hunger. Good Lord.
CHEF (2014)
Director: Jon Favreau
Cast: Jon Favreau, Sophia Vergara, John Leguizamo, Emjay Anthony
Chef is a nice, laid back film, filled with visually appealing shots, good food, and a fun story about family, life, and the power of social media. It revolves around Carl Casper (Favreau), a seasoned chef who has lost his sense of artistry through restrictions, employment, and life. He came across a renowned food blogger that lambasted his menu online, and overnight, his bad review became viral over the internet. This led from one thing to another, and the next thing he knows, he’s jobless, miserable, and lonely. As he tries to discover what would make him satisfied and happy, he found himself stuck inside a food truck, traveling across the country with his son, Percy (Anthony), and his good friend, Martin (Leguizamo), while making great Cuban food and becoming an online sensation.
What I love the most about Chef is its simple storyline and premise: if you don’t do something, then you’d definitely find yourself stuck in misery. Chef shows that you have to chase for your own happiness – and that definitely hit me hard in the face. Happiness is something that we all wanted to have, but we’re too scared to do. Traveling alone? Resigning on your current job? Shifting from one course to another? Sure, that would make you happy, but you’re too scared to go out of the box. Just like Carl, we all think that routine is safe, and going out of it would just create chaos. But what we don’t know is that sometimes, the most ridiculous, out-of-this-world ideas are the best ideas you’ll ever have. You’d have to sacrifice and endure a lot to find “happiness”, but it sure is worth it.
I also love the fact that the film is so chill; it brings back good memories of summer, beach, and beer. Latino music, riffed guitars, and some saxophone – it just brings you to the right mood. Partnered with the cool tone palette, smooth transitions and cuts, as well as wonderful shots of food and cooking, I tell you, if you want to feel good, then this movie is for you. It’s like watching a cooking show on the beach, while you’re starving under the hot, humid day; despite the fact that it heightens your hunger, it also makes you unbelievably satisfied in a very masochistic way.
For the love of food, this movie is definitely a must watch.
